Conventional wisdom states that clients want to know exactly what they are getting. Subscription boxes, on the other hand, contain a variety of products. The person may know that they are getting art supplies, for example, but don’t know whether it will be paints or pencils.

People also don’t get to choose when they want to order. They pay the subscription and the boxes are delivered at a set time. Nothing about this idea makes sense from a conventional standpoint.

Despite this, it is an idea that is highly successful. People love the surprise element and they love a bargain. Those making up the boxes incorporate some high value products and some lower value ones, but overall there is a perception by the client that she’s getting a great deal.

Innovators at the time tapped into the feeling that people were becoming blasé about online shopping. This was a new way to excite and delight them. By listening to what the market needs were, the innovators came up with a great solution.

Going forward, if online vendors are to succeed, they need to adopt the same kind of attitude. And, while changes may be quite significant, they rarely happen overnight. If you learn the direction the market is heading in, you can start leading trends.
